Characterizing Crystalline-Vitreous Structures: From Atomically Resolved Silica to Macroscopic Bubble Rafts
نویسندگان
چکیده
A two-part experiment using bubble rafts to analyze amorphous structures is presented. In the first part, the distinctions between crystalline and vitreous structures are examined. In the second part, the interface between crystalline and amorphous regions is considered. Bubble rafts are easy to produce and provide excellent analogy to recent research results on the atomic structure of silica glass. Ring statistics are employed to characterize the 2D structures and results from student bubble raft data are compared to results from atomically resolved images of amorphous 2D silica; the bubble rafts demonstrate good qualitative agreement. In these experiments, students learn how to characterize crystalline and amorphous materials and are introduced to current research results and analysis techniques for amorphous material structures.

Crystalline-vitreous interface in two dimensional silica.
The interface between a crystalline and a vitreous phase of a thin metal supported silica film was studied by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The locally resolved evolution of Si-Si nearest neighbor distances and characteristic angles was evaluated across the border. Furthermore, we investigated the behavior of the ring size distribution close to the crystalline-vitreous transiti...
متن کاملAppendix A: Background Information on Silica
“Silica,” is a term which refers broadly to the mineral compound silicon dioxide (SiO2). Silica can be crystalline or amorphous. Crystalline silica is significantly more hazardous to employees than amorphous silica. In addition to causing the disabling and irreversible lung disease known as silicosis, crystalline silica has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for R...
متن کاملPhotoluminescence dispersion as a probe of structural inhomogeneity in silica
We report time-resolved photoluminescence spectra of point defects in amorphous silicon dioxide (silica), in particular the decay kinetics of the emission signals of extrinsic Oxygen Deficient Centres of the second type from singlet and directly-excited triplet states are measured and used as a probe of structural inhomogeneity. Luminescence activity in sapphire (α-Al2O3) is studied as well and...
متن کاملSupport effects on the atomic structure of ultrathin silica films on metals
We studied the atomic structure of ultrathin silica films on Pt(111) in comparison with the previously studied films on Mo(112) and Ru(0001). The results obtained by scanning tunneling microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy suggest that the metal-oxygen bond strength plays the decisive role in the atomic structure of the silica overlayers on metal...
متن کاملThin silica films on Ru(0001): monolayer, bilayer and three-dimensional networks of [SiO4] tetrahedra.
The atomic structure of thin silica films grown over a Ru(0001) substrate was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, helium ion scattering spectroscopy, CO temperature programmed desorption, and scanning tunneling microscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations. The films were prepared by S...
